Drug-Related Crimes (Illegal & Prescription)

Marijuana and narcotic drugs are illegal in Texas.  Punishment ranges vary widely depending on the substance and amount possessed.  The most common drug charges faced by students are Possession of Marijuana (POM), Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (PODP), and Possession of a Controlled Substance (POCS).

A conviction for drug possession or drug paraphernalia could prohibit you from receiving any federal student financial aid and government housing.  Just paying a citation, even if you plead no contest (no lo contendere), is a conviction and has life-long consequences. If you are an international student, legal permanent resident or have any immigrant status, and you get a drug charge, you could be placed in deportation proceedings, deported, and barred from re-entering the United States. Please see the Office of the Attorney for Students before you take any action.
